I am a Biomedical Sciences student at the University of Westminster, driven by a passion for engaging in diverse opportunities and committing to them wholeheartedly. I have embraced a philosophy of mutual exchange — to give as much as I gain.

Through the Gene Editors of the Future program, I had the unique chance to participate not only in academic activities but also in meaningful community service. I take pride in calling myself a “Gene Editor,” as this platform has cemented my growth both personally and professionally, setting me apart from my peers. The program offers rare and invaluable insights and resources.

Never did I imagine, before starting university, that I would undergo such impactful training, which has elevated my knowledge and confidence to new heights. My enthusiasm for Gene Editors of the Future inspired me to stay involved throughout my university journey. I eagerly participated in events of all scales, including British Conference for Undergraduate Research to London Mayoral assembly, which further enhanced my skills and strengthened my connection to the program.

Each activity I engaged in has played an important role in my development, and to this day, I share the accomplishments and opportunities this programme offers. Dr Kalpana has played a key role in my journey, and her guidance has given me the confidence to proudly say that I am deeply grateful to be part of the Gene Editors family.

British Conference for Undergraduate Research

My first undergraduate conference where I presented my mini group project from advanced training in CRISPR/Cas9. An incredible opportunity, the start of my professional networking beyond the university. This conference marked my journey of valuable connections with individuals passionate about the field of research.

Open day

While representing the Gene Editors of the Future on open days at the University, I saw different side of a professional life. I still remember the curious faces and nervous smiles; it is the events like these that showcase the importance of being a Gene Editor. This platform has prepared me to communicate with people from all levels.

London Mayoral Assembly

With no interest in politics, Gene Editors of the Future engaged me to step into the political community. I worked alongside my Gene Editors family and colleagues from numerous other organisations to organise the assembly hall. Since then, I believe I understand the importance of the democracy to ensure fair community for every citizen.

SCIENCE 4U

When I say there could be nothing more in student life, I was always left stunned with new events. The SCIENCE 4U event specifically tested my knowledge and skills. Standing in front of secondary school students, I was confident enough to talk about science. Gene Editors of the Future has prepared me to talk science whether it’s the students or a professional. I am inspired to encourage others, who might need a moment to step into the science world.

Members of Parliament (MP) event

Actively participating in activities arranged for Gene Editor showed my act of responsibility, therefore, I was entrusted to be a host for the members of the parliament. It was an achievement to able to raise concerns for fellow citizens and question the MP candidates whether they will act on the behalf of the city of Westminster community.

General Elections

Imagine standing in front of 2000 citizens… Well, that was me but with the West London banner in hand. A female student from the University of Westminster representing her community because I was prepared through Gene Editors of the Future program which ultimately led me to stand proudly on stage during the General Elections.

Shadowing

I wanted to engage in lab work, but my limited lab skills restrained me. However, after the Gene Editors iteration I requested to shadow doctoral and master students. I first hand witnessed the complex research projects running and help with anything to the best of my abilities.

Undergraduate Research Forum where Gene Editors meet Engineers

BPA vs BPS; who is the villain?,  the topic of my presentation which I delivered at the research forum at the Queen Mary University. Engaging with interdisciplinary team, sharing experience enhanced my skills and broadened my perspective of collaborative and impactful research.

Field trip

Gene Editors of the Future is not just focused on academic activities. We also go on trips to treat ourselves. One of the amazing trips was the day we all spent at the lavender filed where we got to explore not just the field itself but each other’s experiences. This trip gave us a memorable day with lots of fun!
