For Your Inspiration Inside DNA – Royal Institution, Friday, 17 March 2023
The prestigious Royal Institution in London once again became a hub of scientific exploration as over 200 students aged 13+ gathered with their parents and guardians for an evening dedicated to the fascinating world of DNA, genetics, and STEM careers.
The event aimed to introduce students on the cusp of their GCSEs and A-Levels to groundbreaking research in genetics and the array of career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. A Special Showcase Among the 12 esteemed groups invited to exhibit was the “Gene Editors of the Future” community, which proudly joined a fantastic lineup of teams from renowned institutions such as Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), King’s College London (KCL), Oxford, Cambridge – School of Clinical Medicine, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), Leeds, and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).
The Gene Editors of the Future student leaders presented an engaging and interactive display of DNA editing and cellular disease research, providing young attendees with brief hands-on experiences in microscopic imaging and morphological assessment of cell health.
These sessions were followed by a vibrant science fair, where students explored interactive exhibits, asked questions, and connected with professionals in the field. Attendees were not only inspired by the science but also by the diverse range of careers within genetics, from laboratory research to bioinformatics, clinical applications, and beyond.
A milestone for STEM outreach, the inclusion of the Gene Editors of the Future community at this prestigious event underscored its commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering a passion for STEM among young learners.

Gene Editors of the Future Program Hosts Community Engagement Event at St. James’s Church
Students from the “Gene Editors of the Future” program organized a significant event at St. James’s Church, where they showcased their leadership and commitment to community engagement. Under the supervision of Dr. Kalpana Surendranath, the students coordinated the event, taking on various crucial roles to ensure its success.
Mishal Mansha Akhtar and Iman Benacef served as Chairs, leading the proceedings, while Maha Mahboob documented the event as the notetaker. Dr. Shally Sultana and Md Kawser Khan managed timekeeping duties, ensuring a smooth flow of activities. Khalid Akram conducted the roll call and captured key moments as the event photographer.
The event, held in collaboration with Citizens UK, brought together the City of Westminster College, members of the church, the local community, and the three Members of Parliament candidates for City of Westminster: Rachel Blake, Tim Barnes, and Edward Lucas.
Gene Editors took on every role, delivering impactful speeches addressing pressing societal issues. These included:
- Refugees and Asylum Seekers, presented by Maha Mansha Akhtar.
- Climate Issues, discussed by Nadine Benyahia.
- Living Wage Advocacy, highlighted by Harshana Chaurasia.
To conduct this event, Gene Editors facilitated discussions, hosted the MPs, and helped community members present their concerns and proposals directly to their representatives, showcasing their exceptional leadership skills.
The event emphasised the commitment of the “Gene Editors” to encourage civic engagement and social inclusion among young people. By involving people from diverse levels and backgrounds, including residents, the event highlighted the significance of collaboration in addressing community challenges. This event also signifies how students’ community engagement can help them become changemakers

Gene Editors of the Future Programme Takes Centre Stage at London Mayoral Assembly 2024
The students of the University of Westminster’s Gene Editors of the Future program, demonstrated their commitment to civic engagement and community service.
In a significant event for London’s civic life, the Gene Editors organised the London Mayoral Assembly 2024. This event brought together a diverse audience, including local residents, community leaders, and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, to discuss pressing issues.
Gene editors managed the strategic arrangement of the venue for close to 2000 participants, ensuring it could accommodate the large crowds and high-profile attendees with ease and professionalism.
The event is a result of the collaborative work of the students: Maha Mansha Akhtar, Khalid Akram, Harshana Chaurasia, Mishal Mansha Akhtar, Maha Mahboob, Dr Assem Kalykova, Dr Serzhan Mombekov, Aya Hijazi, Magdalena Ruiz Perez, Jolina Veismann, and Aabha Khaparde.
Through their contributions, the Gene Editors of the Future have showcased the program’s mission to equip young leaders with the skills and confidence needed to influence positive change in society. Gathering the activities and impact of the event, London Mayoral Assembly 2024 stands as a testament to how educational programs like Gene Editors of the Future can empower students to become active participants in shaping the world around them.
