Gene editing allows the introduction of desirable changes in the genome of living cells using CRISPR/Cas9 and has fundamentally transformed research and development in biomedical sciences and biotechnology. The Gene Editors of the Future program of the School of Life Sciences at the University of Westminster brings together student researchers interested in gene editing, enabling them to pursue their passion, develop essential skills, and form meaningful authentic learning experiences. We equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical expertise necessary to investigate molecular and cellular puzzles of nature using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Since 2020, the program has co-created and collaborated with over 700 students of all levels and international scholars through co-curricular and extracurricular activities through partnerships within the University and external organisations. Aligning with the University’s vision of promoting equality, inclusion, and diversity, we also explore possibilities to leverage students’ leadership potential to drive positive change with a strong dedication to ethical and sustainable practices. Evidence of student experiences, feedback, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be seen in the relevant sections.
